Ashtamir Kashmiri Aloo Dum - Srabani Maitra


(I got this recipe from my mother and it’s one of my favorite dishes. She usually serves it with Luchi.)


 500 Gms Potatoes

2 onions
2 green chillies
(1") piece ginger (adrak)                                
2 small tomatoes

1 tsp of cumin seeds (jeera)

2 tbsp of soaked nuts

2 tbsp of grated coconut

½ tsp sugar

10-12 raisins
salt to taste

3 tbsp oil




Boil the potatoes and then fry them till they are golden brown. Drain on paper towels and keep aside. Make a smooth paste of soaked nuts, tomatoes, onion, ginger, green chilies and coconut. Heat oil.  Put the jeera seeds and wait till they start to crackle. Add the paste and fry till oil separates. Add salt, sugar, raisins and water to make the gravy. Once the gravy starts boiling, put the potatoes in, cover and cook on a low flame for 10 mins.  Turn off the flame and serve hot with rice or roti.
